If there was ever an athlete who embodied the true Olympic spirit, then Oscar Pistorius is certainly the best example one can ever find. The 21-year South African athlete had both his legs amputated below the knees when he was a mere 11 months old. The brave 400m runner, who runs on specially adapted carbon fiber blades, was however banned from competing in all competitions featuring able-bodied athletes in the Beijing Olympics on grounds that artificial legs gave him unfair advantage. Nicknamed “Blade runner”, the athlete saw the ban imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The decision however hasn’t yet translated into a Beijing ticket for the runner since he still has to beat the 45.95 seconds margin. His personal best till date for 400 meters is 46.46 seconds. We wish him the best of luck and hope to see him in Beijing soon!
