Posted By: Vikas Shekhawat | Jul 7 2006

While we were still waiting for Greg Kolodziejzyk to show his knack by breaking the 24-hour human powered distance record of 1021.36 km, "Fast Freddy" Markham appeared out of the rubble paddling his human powered Easyracer bicycle. With this feat, Markham is undisputedly crowned the world's fastest man by paddling 53.43 miles (85.987 kilometres) in one hour and winning the Dempsey-MacCready Hour Record Prize.

The key to success in human powered bicycling couples athleticism and highly streamlined aerodynamic shell that encases the bikes and readies it for the real kill. To get a clear picture, check out here Greg Kolodziejzyk driving his 'Critical Power' and you would find how hard it is to recline and attain the desired speed on just a few hundred watts of power.

According to Chet Kyle, founder of the Human Powered Vehicle Association, these awesome machines can attain a massive 3000 miles per gallon if powered by gasoline. Wow! Who needs a Ferrari now?
