FanWing Company is a trailblazer in a radical new way of flying. Its concept FanWing aircraft flies using a fixed wing, and by forcing airflow produced by cylindrical fans mounted above the wing, technically referred to as “distributed-propulsion vortex-lift” technology”. Clearly it is quite different from the usual aircrafts and helicopters. It can take off vertically and land in much the same manner. FlyWing is also extremely quiet, comparatively speaking of course. Recently the company displayed an unmanned prototype of the weird aircraft at the ParcAberporth Unmanned Systems 2008 event. The modified STOL UAV took two flights on grass and the videos, as well the static plane, were put on show at the Farnborough International Air Show. After the success of the flight, FanWing would like to develop manned applications too, which the company says have very low carbon footprint. That’s some way off and till then contend yourselves by watching the video after jump.
