GOD DAMN THAT’S COOL! I’ve never been a big fan of the Batman series, but this is the kind of thing that reminds me of all the batman stuff. Invented by Richard Palmer, ‘d3o(dee-three-oh)‘ is a ground-breaking shock-absorbent material that could bring a revolution in every sector, from the military to motor sports. The superhero suit is finally here.
What it is made of?
The d3o, in simple words, is a sophisticated polymer with an intellectual molecular structure that flows with you as you move but, the moment it feels any shock, gets locked together to become stiff enough to absorb impact energy. It’s very much like an automatic knee-pad that can be propagated seamlessly into a pair of jeans.
Possible Applications:
Developed using state-of-the-art scientific techniques, the d3o’s unique molecular structure helps it survive the hardest hit while it still stays supple enough to let you move and run at swift speeds with utmost ease. The new shock-absorbing material is bound to take the world by storm.
As the protection paraphernalia currently on the shelves is bulky and unprepossessing, the d3o can be incorporated directly into clothing and is light, flexible, and offering full freedom of movement. It is possible of providing armored shield against crude concrete and barbed wire. And yes, you can make a full superhero suit with d3o. Palmer cited:
What we’ve developed is already being incorporated into everything from police body armor to protective sportswear, and the number of applications is almost infinite.
Dream meets realism:
Richard palmer was honored as the O2 X Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 for his breakthrough achievement at an awards ceremony in London. But, the way was not easy for him. He sold his house and car in the year 1999 and shifted into a friend’s spare bedroom and did everything himself. The project was started inside a garage lab. Presently, the material has been adopted earnestly by the likes of US Olympic ski team, the four times Everest climber Kenton Cool and Olympic cyclist Craig McClean.
The challenge ahead:
At the moment a complete superhero suit made of our material would be a bit too heavy and far too expensive, but those challenges should be overcome within the next few years.
D3o lab has already the honor of making many other products in its booty, including a rigid Frisbee that folds like a soft handkerchief when you grasp it, the world’s first bullet-proof wallpaper, and a lightweight protective covering. Palmer said that they will continue with the development of the revolutionary new material.
Hopefully, we might see a reasonably priced complete superhero suit made of d3o within a few years from now. And yes, it won’t be odd to call the d30 lab, a BATLAB.
