Good old Japan; where an earthquake is never too distant in future. So what do people do there to prepare for a disaster that strikes without any warning signs? Nothing much except maybe watch animals for weird behavior. Stupid animals, think they can predict earthquakes. Their predicting days are numbered, read on:
Japanese innovators have developed a gadget known as EQGuard Home Earthquake Alarm System that warns users 20 seconds before an earthquake strikes. But I do not think that 20 seconds are quite enough to assemble your family, including your naughty kids, and transport them to a safe place.
Security firm SunShine Co. Ltd. says this should give people enough time to hide under tables, turn off gas and fire sources or even just to move away from potentially dangerous furniture. Yeah, those will be first things on people’s minds. I say ‘RUN’ like hell! Push those old ladies out of the way if necessary and get out of those dangerous buildings.
Functioning of the system
The new gadget, that has potential to save a number of lives, is the size of a novel and works by drawing information from Japan’s Meteorological Agency over the internet. Data provided by JAMA is transferred over the net and the device’s early warning system starts a loud countdown lasting for up to 20 seconds before, boom, ground zero.
Also, JAMA is looking to send warnings over the internet, via email and even via text messages, starting sometimes in the latter half of this year.
The Japanese Electronics Industries Association, which reviews products, has a different notion about these developments. It says that JAMA’s data is often wrong and might cause unnecessary panic. I say, better safe than sorry.
Diary entry: Must not go to Japan. EVER.
