Dual core smartphones - the good, the bad and the ugly

Smartphones always receive advanced versions from their manufacturers with better processors in speed and performance. Boosting the capacity of processors is one of signs of development in smartphone industry. From single core processors, smartphone makers have started to mount dual core processors on fresh versions of their products. Technology makers like LG and HTC have so far introduced some models with dual core processors. LG’s Optimus 2X, possibly the world’s first dual core smartphone will be wonderful product. Chip designers such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have developed many dual core processors, which can be used in smartphones for greater performance.

The Good

Additional processor

With a dual core processor, smartphones get an additional processor for better handling of background tasks and running multiple apps at a time. Thanks to dual core processors, users can run multiple applications simultaneously, says Robert Tolbert of Texas Instruments. The device will never go exhausted even if you surf multiple websites, listen to music, chat on IM, put some files on download and play 3D games at the same time. Since the additional processor ratchets up clock speed, the smartphone will work quite smoother than it is on a single core processor.

High-Speed, High-Tech Dual-Core Experience

Why good

Smartphones with dual core processors will perform two times better than devices that sport single core processors. Indeed, high-speed and high-tech performance is the prime feature of smartphones with dual core CPU. Needless to say, web browsing, gaming, video capturing and recording will be quite faster on such devices. Impeccable multitasking capability, greater touch response and many other features will make smartphones outshine single core CPU-powered devices.

Full HD Entertainment Package

Why good

Thanks to NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2 mobile dual-core CPU, LG Optimus 2X has dazzling features like Full High Definition multimedia and HDMI mirroring. Full HD feature helps the smartphone capture and play videos at 1080p. HDMI mirroring is meant to stream contents of the phone to larger displays like TVs, computer monitors and other platforms with a single cable. Amazingly, in help of the device’s gyro sensor, HDMI mirroring feature can be used to play motion-sensitive game on similar bigger platforms.

Overcomes many performance issues

Why good

Since dual-core processors fortify a smartphone, several performance issues of single core CPU may not repeat on a device. The smartphone’s capacity to run multiple programs and apps will indeed make the device further powerful and stronger. Above anything, smoother performance is the biggest advantage of the advanced processors.

The bad

Game not designed to take advantage of the multiple processors

Along with a number of features with the multi-core powered smartphones, there may be some shortcomings too. First of all, most of popular games and apps available in the market may not fit with the performance of smartphones with dual core processors. In case of such games, one processor of the device will remain dormant. That means the speed benefit of a dual core processor will not be available for the particular user.

Clock Speeds

In fact, dual core processors offer faster clock speeds than a single core processor. Everyone may know that the higher the clock speed, the faster the CPU will be. Hence, a dual core processor will provide more speed for a device apart from a single core processor. But when games and apps designed for single core CPU-powered smartphones are run on devices with dual core processors, users may not get the benefit of extra speed. Concisely, a device with single core processor of 2GBz capacity will be more comfortable than a device of dual core CPU, with each processors featuring 1GHz.

The ugly

Poor battery life

The possible worst thing with a dual core smartphone will certainly be poor battery life. Since both the processors swallow up the power quickly, battery may soon exhaust. Notably LG has not yet revealed data for the expected standby time for its Optimus 2X. Instead, the company mentioned that the device will sport a hefty battery keeping in mind the fact that consumers may go confused on it.

The verdict

At a whole, it is certain that you can run several apps and games at a time on a dual core processor-powered smartphone. The device will never go weary even if you do multiple activities. We can hope that LG Optimus 2X will indeed be a great initiator of dual core smartphone revolution. Several other manufactures will immediately emerge out with similar smartphones.
