Be it recalling of a memory of the past, soothing your senses or simply smelling just the way you want them to- this clothing can do it all! Jenny Tillotson, the one who conceptualized this clothing line and is also a senior research fellow in Fashion and Textile Design at the University of the Arts, London explains at the Humanity+ conference on transhumanism,

Based on the sense of smell embedded this in the clothing, I’m trying to redesign the future through smell. Mood-enhancing effects can have an impact on behavior, learning; it's a hot wire to the brain. You could use scent to train the nerves and brain to help you wake up in the morning, go to sleep at night, keep you alert in the office.

It is said that the brilliant idea hit Tillotson while working with HIV-related charities. She observed that while the depressing smell that lurked in the hospitals affected the temperament of the patients adversely, the scnet of something pleasant, like flowers, could uplift their mood. This, in turn, facilitates recovery in patients. She connected this to the logic of scent communication amongst insects and the idea of the futuristic clothing powered with smells was thus born.

How would the idea work?

It is quite simple to understand, actually. Many tiny tubes with timers will run across the garment. The wearer can set timers to release specific scents at a preferred time in the day. Additionally, the garments would have embedded biometric sensors that can track heart rates and stress levels. Thus, the clothing could calm and soothe the wearer during stress. Tillotson also claims that this clothing can help in cases of dementia in the elderly. Since scents are most closely connected to memory, specific scents can be used to evoke specific memories in the aged. The memory could be that of a celebration or even the address of an acquaintance.

As of now, the idea is yet to materialize and may take some time to materialize. But whenever you hear of the futuristic scent-embedded clothing technology available near you, you better keep your favorite scent ready.
