Dragon Runner, the bomb-disposal robot is out in Britain

With improvised explosive device becoming a new tactic in war, it is worthy to have robots that can help us locate and defuse the IEDs before destruction is caused. Keeping in mind, the British Ministry of Defense has revealed a 14lb bomb-disposal robot. Christened the Dragon Runner, the best part about the 9- x 8- x 3-inch robot is that it can be worn as a backpack and can be carried to all suspicious locations by the soldier. Capable of moving at speeds of up to 5mph, the Dragon Runner controlled via a game console like controller can climb stairs, open doors and move about in almost all terrains in almost all weathers.

Fixed with a forward extending manipulator arm the robot can also dig up around explosives and lift up to 10 lb weight as and when required. Based on a six wheel design with four cameras on board, the Dragon also doubles as a surveillance robot, relying back video footages that can be seen individually or as a grid. About 100 of these multi-terrain bomb disposal robots have already been built by QinetiQ UK.
