Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) has developed a light emitting material that can be printed using existing technologies. This makes the material easily usable on paper and cloth, and opens up many avenues for its use. The material is made of three main components, a metal compound composed mainly of ruthenium provides luminescence, an ionic liquid serves as the electrolyte and silica compounds gelate the metal compound.
A film more than 25 micrometer thick can provide 200 cd/m2 luminance on application of a 3.3 Volts. All this makes the film fairly portable, rugged and easy to manufacture. DNP plans to commercialize the product in five years.
