google gdrive

It was around 18 months ago when Google’s GDrive service raised some concerns and for that matter some reviews also. This service was to allow users to upload all the data that has been stored on their hard drives onto Google’s servers. This technique was thought to be useful as users won’t require to purchase expensive HDDs to store their data. Even a small HDD would be enough as a cache just to house the operating system. Other benefits of this service were that users would be enabled to access their data from any computer on the planet and that too from any platform.

Things have changed now and this innovative service by the search engine giant seems to be in the dark. A Google video created by Google Employee shows that the GDrive was ready for launch in 2002, but the company never opted to release it to the public. There are rumors that the plan seems to be cancelled. However, there is no confirmation from the company as yet.

The service created so much hype that there were speculations that software giant Microsoft was also developing a similar service called the Live Drive and that too before the GDrive. Then there was a confirmation that GDrive client is being used by the employees of the company. This was the last thing that flooded media organizations. It has been ten months since then, but there is no news of GDrive and Live Drive till now. We can say that Live Drive was a rumor that came out to be wrong, but what about Google Drive…?

Google, who once ruled the market with the then unprecedented 2GB storage for online mail with Gmail is now a minnow as its competitors such as Yahoo and Microsoft have taken a lead. Yahoo now provides unlimited email storage and Hotmail offers a massive 5GB storage area to its users.

Google had many reasons to cancel their program. If the service is released today, users like me will try to upload multi-gigabyte of data on their servers, this would choke the internet. Moreover, the sum total of data that users will try to upload is unimaginable and internet does not have space to accommodate that much on their servers as this would make their search and mail slow. Maybe Google is waiting for the next big thing in storage technology before the launch. For now, we all have to remain satisfied with what all storage we possess in those 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch boxes.
