Device crowd-sources water quality to help prevent water bound diseases

Water can contain harmful elements, but thanks to Water Canary, unveiled at the TED Global Conference in Edinburgh, which checks water supplies, the users can be alerted against the possible infections. The device can upload data which scientists can monitor the location and movement of disease outbreaks. The device, which crowd-sources water quality can test for both micro-biological and chemical contamination using spectral technology.

Contaminated water, causing three million deaths across the world each year, has been a major concern for all. The Water Canary, an open source tool for rapid water testing and transmitting information to be instantly assessed, shows us a way to fitting the peril. Water Canary will prove to be very helpful in water testing which until now was a slow and expensive process, the best thing about this device is that it can operate on wireless network also by sending GPS tagged data from any available network. Using spectral technology, you can generously test biological and chemical contaminations. The red and green lights on the device provide information on the quality of water, suggesting if the water is safe for drinking or not.
