The folks at Swedish startup Minesto have come up with something they call an underwater kite. Dubbed the “Deep Green,” this new kind of tidal power generator utilizes hydrodynamics to harness tidal currents at ten times the speed of the actual stream velocity. The pioneering technology integrates a turbine to a wing and a rudder that are tied to the ocean floor using a 100 meter long cable. The relatively small turbine, measuring some 12 meters is capable of generating 500 kilowatts of power. The $2.5 million financial backing received by Minesto will aid in initiating trails in 2010. The Deep Green is still four years away from commercial availability.
