If you thought cyborgs exist only in the realms of imagination and fantasy, think again! In a revolutionary attempt, a research team funded by the Pentagon has taken a giant leap into the mysterious future. Cyborg insects have, for long, been the focus of intense research. However, limitations in their lifespan had prompted researchers to look for solutions that could turn these living, remote-controlled spies into highly potent stealth machines. Apparently, DARPA’s researchers have succeeded in extending the lifespan of the cyborg insects by implanting a Micro-Mechanical System (MEMS) into the bug’s body during early metamorphosis. In doing so, the systems fuse into the body as the bug grows. Additionally, the researchers also discovered that the energy created when the bug moves could be used to run the MEMS. The cyborgs (read cybugs?) will prove to be useful stealth agents by relaying critical information via sensors or an inbuilt microphone. The future is definitely here!
