Airbags, head restraints, pedestrian friendly bumpers, etc have all come from crash testing automobiles and Toyota has developed a state-of-the-art simulation software to do just this. This computer simulation is called the THUMS (Total Human Model Safety) and has been used by the FIA and Toyota to analyze how the human body interacts with the car during an accident. The FIA in particular has used this system to see how the human body reacts during rearward impact. Like always, we can expect a new system to protect the spinal cord as the result of the FIA’s study. A major benefit of this computer simulation will be the cost saving aspect as the computer will now be able to simulate an actual crash instead of the very expensive and time consuming crash tests. Like in the past, we could see new safety technology trickling down slowly into the road cars from the race cars.
