With each passing day technology is blurring the lines between the possible and the probable. Visual clarity and splendor are no longer confined to the big screen or the television sets. In the digital age, beautiful images are as much a part of your system’s screen as anywhere else. Taking this trend forward is the ColorEdge CG301W launched by Eizo Nanao Technologies at PMA 2008 in Las Vegas. The new age monitor employs a gamut LCD panel that is 100% vs. NTSC and reproduces 97% of the Adobe RGB color space. The monitor is designed to provide with both visual clarity and perfection in tones in every possible way. This monitor’s amazing amalgamation of the latest technology available such as 12-bit hardware calibration provides greater clarity. Eizo has calibrated each unit, by measuring every tone from 0 - 255 to produce a gamma curve of 2.2, that guarantees both amazing visuals and also the right color tones.

In case of the ColorEdge it is the hardware calibration which makes sure that the monitor itself is calibrated rather than the computer’s graphics board, as is the case with software calibration. This ensures non-loss of color tones in the calibration process. This also means that one gets a very factual representation of the original image and a great attention to detail. The calibration software comes with the CG301W and allows for setting the values for brightness, white point, and gamma. The software also supports other calibration devices such as Eye-One, DTP94, DTP94B, and MonacoOPTIX, all from X-Rite.

One of the better features that make this monitor so unique is the fact that one can adjust the color settings of the monitor to emulate a color space or color characteristics of another monitor. This makes the process of interfacing and exchanging data a lot easier and hassle free, especially when it comes to studying data. The native resolution is 2560×1600 (16:10 aspect ratio). A picture-by-picture function divides the screen into two equal halves, offering two 1200×1600 monitors with no center bezel. This allows the user to obtain and view input from two different computers such as a Windows and a Macintosh and work on two tasks simultaneously without having to painfully toggle back and forth.

The monitor also comes equipped with Eizo’s ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). The ASIC has a 12-bit look-up table with a total color palette of 68.1 billion colors from which the most appropriate 16.7 million are selected. This again means that one gets the best image possible and also ensures that the image resolution and color is not concentrated at the center of the screen and is uniform through out. This ensures that the image is as clear at the edges of the screen as it is at the center. All in all, the ColorEdge CG301W is a great buy, especially for those who work a great deal around finely enhanced images. I suppose it is a great gift for a forensic investigator; unconventionally speaking that is.
