China, in a bid to become a world leader in technology, has developed the country’s fastest supercomputer, dubbed the Tianhe, meaning Milky Way. The supercomputer unveiled by The National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) can perform 1 quadrillion calculations per second (one petaflop) at top speed. The computer which is slated to be used for bio-medical computing, seismic data processing etc, has been submitted as a nominee for ranking in the Top500 supercomputer list. Tianhe, which is an 11,000 microprocessor device, will be moved to the Nation Supercomputer Center later in the year. The Defense university have spent about 600 million Yuan (approx. $88 million) in building the computing device.
