It looks that nothing is impossible for the Chinese to achieve even if it means manipulating the rainfall. To ensure that the Olympic Games that will begin in August this year, become a fair weather event, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau claims to have succeeded in their experiments in stopping the rain. As difficult as it is to manipulate the weather, the Chinese meteorologists claim that their method will work only on light rain. So what will happen if there is a heavy downpour? Let us hope that the rain gods will not be that difficult to be handled by the Chinese scientists.
The greatest impediment in controlling rainfall is the possible adverse impact it has on the environment. China claims that their method will not harm the environment. They hope to use liquid nitrogen to increase the size of droplets and decrease their mean size for cold clouds below zero degrees. The smaller droplets are less likely to fall as rains and clouds carrying them will be easily drifted away by the winds.
Silver iodide, a seeding agent will be used to increase the rate of collision and coalescence of droplets in clouds above zero degrees producing a downdraft that prevents cloud formation.
Another method involves firing seeding agents into clouds from anti-aircraft guns before the clouds could reach the games stadium losing all its perspiration at the periphery of the games arena.
