Laptops have become irreplaceable to the business traveler. The convenience and comfort of carrying a laptop might definitely be immense, however, laptops themselves are seen as being cumbersome to carry. Soon, cellphones might replace laptops as the business traveler’s preferred gadget. Fuji Xerox Palo Alto Laboratory (FXPAL) is in the process of developing a technology, which aims to make it easier to not only transfer documents to a phone, but also make them more readable, with their screens being so small. The technology called Seamless Documents would store, analyze and identify keyphrases, which might assist the user to not go through lengthy paragraphs. The reader can then scan a document for details based on his/her requirements.
To build software which zooms into a text and yet doesn’t make the reader lose his orientation seems to be the main objective of this research. Analog documents are converted to the digital format, scanned and the software automatically picks out keywords, summarizes the text and highlight important information. The small screens of cellphones shouldn’t be a problem anymore. The other objective of the research concentrates on the interactive interface of such cellphones. The user must be able to open files, read the document’s summary, extract images, and avoid images that don’t fit the document. FXPAL design has a great future, only if the studies help to apply the software to hand held devices.
