The fact that the number of cell phone subscriptions has surpassed the population in about 30 countries proves that it’s no more a gadget for the creamy layer, rather an inevitable necessity.
The more than 100 per cent mobile penetration, as researched by Informa Telecom & Media, clearly depicts the growing craze to go mobile. People with more than one subscription too have given fillip to the craze. The phenomenon is no more restricted to developed countries; it has successfully penetrated developing and poor countries too with companies providing handsets and subscriptions at dirt-cheap rates.

I have this picture with me from the last 6 yrs or so. It was taken during the last Kumbh in Allahabad. The pic brought back a million memories. :-)
I think those numbers are counting cell phones that are not in service anymore. That probably should not count.
