British soldiers to get more efficient bulletproof ‘gel helmets’

Posted By: Harsh | Mar 2 2009

British soldiers will get an addition to their defenses with bulletproof gel helmets. As the name suggests, helmets for the soldiers will contain a gel called d3O, which will be in semi-liquid or flexible form but will solidify instantly on impact. This conversion can rob the bullet (or any other such projectile) of its kinetic energy and minimize any harm to the soldier. Once the pressure is removed, the gel returns to its “normal” semi-liquid state.

The d3O has found application in a number of sporting goods, but with the £100,000 contract from the Ministry of Defence, it will soon make way to the headgear of soldiers, and maybe even expand to bulletproof vests and other equipment.
