Boot-up breakthrough: Linux booted in one second

Posted By: Bharat BhushanSharma | Jul 16 2009

We’ve heard of fast boot times for operating systems, but never did we hear of a boot time as quick as one second achieved successfully on a Linux system by MontaVista. Windows 7 promises to get down the boot time to under 30 seconds, and the recently announced Google Chrome too touts a comparatively fast boot time, but will it be anywhere close to a second, it’s doubtful. It’s only a tech demo now, but this mesmerizing exhibition can surely set a positive impact on boot times for Linux systems over time.

Speaking about the demo, Jim Ready, CTO of MontaVista, said:

"The achievement of one second boot from cold power to operational status is a breakthrough in embedded Linux performance. It's always been thought that embedded Linux could never perform at this level of speed and efficiency."
