Much has been discussed and argued about the efficacy of laser-based defense systems but have not produced satisfactory results till now. However, one might finally see laser being used in the army quite soon if Boeing and Northrop have their way. The sophisticated defense system developed by them, called the ‘Skyguard’, uses laser technology. It could be used as a defense and counter against short/long range rockets, ballistic missiles, artillery projectiles, mortars, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles. The hi-tech YAL-1 Airborne Laser is something that one would want to use if one wants to detect missiles. The system is equipped with a high-energy laser, flight turret assembly, tracker illuminator lasers, and a beacon illuminator. It uses infrared sensors to detect missiles and the laser is fired for 3-5 seconds. It has generated a lot of interest among military establishments.
