For all who know and for the unfamiliar alike, the Blue Brain project was conceived in 2005 to simulate mammal brains reality up in computer models. Many computer simulations have been attempted over time and steadily with the evolution in the sphere, we’re inching closer to brain simulation veracity. Point in case justified by completion of the first phase of the Blue Brain Project, wherein the researcher have managed to model the neocortical column – brain’s part responsible for higher functions and thought.
What’s done in actuality?
The feat has been achieved reaching a detailed simulation of the part of the brain (neocortical column), joining molecule with molecule to build a computation of the real brain. The created brain for experimentation has been embedded into a virtual body living in virtual space, and the results have been alarming, indicating well the neural and molecular basis of memory and thought.
Beyond the present day
There isn’t an iota of doubt over the reality and potential of simulation technology, yet when a shiver runs down my spine, I contemplate the repercussions of human intelligence exchanging places with mechanical diligence. Time is on our side, and astuteness in thought would benefit humanity, if researchers who intend to take Blue Brain into second phase making use of the advanced version of the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer, take heed.
