Blu-ray to unite HD DVD in NEC dual-mode chip at no additional price

To buy a Blu-ray in addition to HD DVD is too expensive, somewhat similar to kill two birds with one stone, for common people.

In an attempt to combine Blu-ray and HD DVD into single format NEC Electronics is transporting a single decoder chip/ hybrid chip capable of handling both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats side by side, at the same price as the single-format.

Equipped with an LSI (large scale integration) solution to handles the drive's internal logic apart from media stream decoding, NEC is expecting to ship 300,000 of the new chips per month by April, 2007.

According to Reuters,

The chips go on sale for 10,000 yen ($84), roughly the same price as NEC Electronics' chips which read only Blu-ray or only HD DVD formats.
