Blast from the past: A watch to cool you off

Posted By: Bharat BhushanSharma | Sep 25 2007

Watches are a major fad round the blocks, and time is its priority use. However, when every other thing has varied uses why not that timepiece on your wrist, or is it exactly that? This is no novel innovation, though, is one from the granny's closet. Extracted from an article in the September 1934 issue of Popular Science, this watch wouldn't help you with time, but will keep you cool through the day!

Designed in the shape of a wristwatch, the midget icebox is a brainchild of the physicists from the University of Purdue - this is a miniature refrigerator that straps to the wrist in the manner of a watch. Larger than the regulation wristwatch, the device encloses within, a pellet of dry ice- solid carbon dioxide.

The dry ice evaporates through the case in the form of invisible gas, and works similarly as the cold water would, when poured on to the wrist, helping lower the temperature of the blood which through the arteries moves to the other body parts, thus keeping the body cool during that hottest day. The insulation is perfect, so no worries of the ice burns - just wear and flaunt the coolest watch with all safety.
