Perhaps, Nature has solution for everything; one just has to be deft enough to understand its tricks to give our wishes the desired shapes. Take our ear, a simple hearing device that surprisingly consumes just 14 millionths of a watt making it possible to run for 15 years on one AA battery. This is what ‘Neuromorphic engineering’ is all about, giving a new light to the blind, deaf, and other physically impaired people and carving out a new path in the field of bionics.



The new bionic ear developed by Rahul Sarpeshkar, an associate professor of electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is much more efficient than most of the existing devices running on a two-gram wireless rechargeable battery. We’re well aware of Phonak’s microSavia and other such devices, but have still not been able to tackle the power problem. This new bionic ear can prove to be the ultimate solution.
