beatnik_18Beatnik’s new digital music format might not lure PC users with a mammoth memory ready to take care of almost everything they need; however, it can certainly turn out to be a breakthrough for mobile/portable gadgets market.

Audiophiles would love to cram more and more collections into their mobile phones with this latest format that claims to compress songs to ten times smaller as compared to our old MP3.

Based on a simple technique, Beatnik’s new audio file format smartly recognizes similar parts in a particular song and saves it in a single file, therefore automatically reducing the space tremendously. During playback, the saved files load on the fly impeccably where they need to be, giving the required output.

Delivers what users actually want

The best thing the new format will offer is fast over-the-air (OTA) track delivery using less bandwidth and time. Till now, only high end users with Smartphones and 3G networks were able to download full tracks over-the-air, however now, mass market consumers with low end phones compatible with over 2.5G networks will be able to realize their dream with the same quality.

Is this the end of MP3, iPod and other similar music players?

We can clearly see that Beatnik’s format though may not create a mass frenzy, but still, as Beatnik founder, Thomas Dolby says, it aims to ‘convert every consumer mobile phone into a personal music player’ and this can definitely shift high-end consumers, though few, to phones with less features, slower GPRS network but high quality music and more space. The service will appeal to developing markets owing to its faster download capability.

It’ll be important to witness how fast the industry incorporate the news format; of course, companies, including Apple, will not switch to it that easily. But one thing is sure, modes to put an end to the already drooping digital music player market is unleashed now.
