BEAR, a dexterous robot for all rescue needs

Posted By: Bharat BhushanSharma | Aug 24 2009

It takes a long time to detect and rescue people in case of emergencies and necessities, and the work’s very risky. The introduction of rescue robots has brought a new wave in rescue operations. Another to match the best with its credentials is the BEAR, or Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot, a US Army-funded humanoid designed to carry out rescue operations, in mines, on the battlefield and in case of earthquakes or other calamities.

Manufactured by Vecna Robotics, the BEAR helps the injured by carrying them to safe spots. In nine different incarnations, with slight improvement in one over the other, the robots are rugged, fast and are equipped with explosion- and fire-resistant battery cells. Featuring an upper body controlled by hydraulics that can lift 500 pounds, the bot’s still being worked on to enable it to act deftly in all situations.
