BDXL format Blu-ray discs increase capacities up to 128GB

The Blu-ray disc Association’s sensed your need for some more storage, a reason it has announced release of a new BDXL format discs that’ll increase the writeable capacity to 128GB and re-writeable capacity to about 100GB. The catch with this increase from the standard 50GB is that, to use the new capacity discs, you’ll have to buy a new player - a mere update will not help here, because these new discs use three to four layers, which would require more powerful lasers to read, something that the old players would lack. Though, being only and format extension, we’d have our fingers crossed to see if these can be worked out for the existing devices – even if it is done, to what capacities, is something that’ll remain to be seen. There’s no word on when new discs will actually hit the market, but details into the tech can be expected to sprout in a few months from now.
