The BBC has now announced that it will launch a downloadable version of its hitherto Window-compatible-only iPlayer for Mac by the end of the year. In a blog posting on the BBC website director general Mark Thompson said, “I hope this good news is evidence of the hard work that th BBC is committing to supporting other formats.” He also offered an explanation for the corporation’s decision to launch the player for Windows only by saying the decision was taken with the view of “making the service available in the shortest time frame to the greatest amount of users.”
He wrote:
Were we to choose to not develop any systems or services until they could be received by every single individual license-fee payer, our capacity for development and innovation - in the interest of serving those who fund our services - would be severely limited.
So far the functional Windows-compatible player offers two user-friendly versions- one allows users to download the programs to their PC and the other is a streaming version to be viewed on the web which is available to all users.
