Apple will be the first to bring augmented reality to their iPhones. Apple has declared that its latest, iPhone 3.1 software will be launched with augmented reality apps to support iPhone 3GS’s camera. These apps enhancing 3GS’s camera will better its Nearest Tube and Nearest Subway apps in OS 3.1. I guess Apple is thinking of Londoners to begin with.

The 3GS’s Nearest Tube and future Nearest Subway apps, were totally dependent on built-in compass and the auto focus camera, that detect the direction the iPhone is facing and detailed look of the area, to come out with the desired info. Acrossair’s software in the iPhone 3.1 can show the relative distance from the next visible subway stop without being dependent, both on, the camera and compass. iPhone 3.1 is due to be rolled out by Apple this September.
