Researchers at the University of California's Davis Medical Center are working on a bionic eye implant which would facilitate individuals with disability in eye blinking, brought about by facial injuries, degenerative muscle diseases, strokes etc, to blink again. The implant centers around a silicon with properties to stretch with rise in temperature. Called electroactive polymer artificial muscle (EPAM), the implant on registering a electrical impulse from the implanted battery allows the eyelid muscles to flex, thus generating a blink. The developed implant seems a brilliant idea that can restore eyesight, because a lot of patients due to losing the ability to blink ultimately become blind.
