Apple TV, even though not quite the polished product, has been a limited success primarily because it was a first in its class. And it has retained the status of being a first mainstream media receiver for quite a while now. However, slowly the competitors are recognizing the potential market that exists for this niche product. Archos TV+ is one such device that seeks to end Apple TV’s dominance.

From the initial pics and info, this seems an upgraded version of Apple’s offering and has the potential to upstage Apple TV. Check out its features:

• A hard drive of 500-GB
• USB 2.0, WiFi, and Ethernet support
• HDMI and RGB I/O
• Capability of acting as a standalone PVR
• A QWERTY keyboard

Compared to Apple TV, this device looks the real deal. Compare Apple TV’s hard disk (80 GB) with Archos’ and you will easily understand why. Apart from this, Archos TV’s compatibility with older TVs is also an important distinguishing feature. It can also record television shows and stream video on the internet.

Apart from the features, it will provide stiff competition on the price front too. Even with all the amazing features listed above, it still carries a lighter price tag. At $270, it will sell below Apple TV’s $300 tag.

A September launch is expected. Apple TV’s supremacy is under some serious threat. Thank Heavens for that!
