Apple unveils 21.5-inch Core i3 education only iMac for $999

Apple has announced a special low-priced entry-level iMac computer for educational purposes. It would be iMac with 21.5-inch display that is specially designed for educational institutions and students, will be up with a price tag of $999. The computer sports a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor with a clocking speed of 3.1GHz and plays on the recent Mac OS X Lion. This iMac is shown off in the company’s higher educational online stores. Students and educational institutions might be happy to get this 21.5-inch iMac for a price below $1000.

Under the hood, the education-only iMac further features an AMD Radeon HD 6750 with a capacity of 256MB, 2GB RAM, Super Drive and 250GB HDD. Of course, it is obvious that Apple has shrunk the technical specifications of the system along with the price. Besides the relatively slower Core i3 processor, the system only has a 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD.

It is not clear whether Apple will add Intel’s high-speed Thunderbolt ports and FaceTime video chatting camera with the new education-only iMac. Apple has slotted in Thunderbolt ports with its iMac lineup upgrades in May 2011. Last month, the company also introduced Thunderbolt ports on its MacBook Air also.

It is not the first low-cost education-only iMac computer from the Cupertino-technology major. Apple launched a 17-inch iMac for $899 sometimes back. The company also made available its entry-level white MacBook Air in July for $999 for educational institutions.
