This new patent application “Method and system for prolonging emergency calls” from Apple does grant me and other adventure freaks a hope of not losing on the emergency vitals of the iPhone at any time. Dated back to December 2007, this lately revealed patent lets the phone create an emergency mode that determines whether the call is an emergency call or not, then making the call harder to disconnect, the application switches off all the non-essential features (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or camera) of the iPhone to give it that extra battery life to live out the call for rescue. Though the application distinguishes between numbers that are emergency numbers, like 911, there is also an option for user defined emergency numbers that can be specified within a dedicated field in the iPhone’s Contacts application. Safety seems a priority here, but when is the patent going to reach production, well, we could keep guessing that for a while.
