Apple’s new patent makes for better viewing experience

iPhone has tolerable quality of pics, a more than tolerable quality of sound and well, storage quality is always improving. So what exactly is the hitch when trying to watch movie on the small gizmo? Obviously it is the screen-size that we have to contend ourselves with. Trust Apple to find a solution to this problem sooner rather than later. To make the viewing experience on-the-go a bit more tolerable, Apple has filed a patent for a laser-based head mounted display for iPod and iPhone. And that’s not something out of the blue since already some of these devices are on the market, albeit they’re a bit bulky and unwieldy. This is precisely the area where Apple wants to make a difference. Instead of putting all the optical elements into the head mounted device, as is the case with conventional devices, Apple proposes to transfer the laser engine, image generation electronics and other paraphernalia in a box that can be conveniently clipped around user’s belt. This box will then be connected to the headset via an optical cable. The headset would ultimately project images through ultra thin wedge optics.

All these arrangements would mean that the thing to be worn on your head would be no big than normal glasses. When idle, this display, to all appearance, would look like a normal transparent pair of spectacles. All of this, of course, could be some time in the making but as Apple is on the case, trust things to move real quickly.
