A patent filing by Apple shows details of a touchscreen navigation system. Most of the systems currently in use can make the driver take eyes off the road, an obvious disadvantage. To get rid of the problems associated with these systems, Apple’s touchscreen system has an iPhone-like self-mounted handheld, or a system hardwired into the car, and is capable of voice-enabled functions for navigation, stereo and phone.
A number of checks can be put on the system, like allowing only the front seat passengers to control the system, disabling the touchscreen functions if the vehicle is in motion and without any passengers, or allowing touchscreen functions if it senses that the vehicle has a passenger. The filing also mentions wireless communication systems like 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, CDMA, GSM and EDGE.
