What Apple can learn from Microsoft to develop better operating systems

In the unending OS battle between two manufacturing giants, Microsoft and Apple, the ones to benefit should always be the end user. Over the years, Apple’s iOS has always been known for being more imaginative and user friendly than its Windows counterparts. However, Windows 8 seems to have a few power packed features that are not offered by the iOS as seen from the latest released demo videos. From the first look, it seems that Apple could use some of the ideas from Windows 8 that would greatly benefit the iPhone and iPad users as well. Listed below are some features that iOS could imbibe from Windows all new OS.

Improved Start Screen

In Windows 8, Microsoft has replaced the icons with a mosaic of tiles. Tiles are better than apps as along with the app icon you can also get a quick overview of all notifications, updates regarding your mails, calendar events, social network, twitter and even weather. This allows you to quickly get on with your day without having to check every single app separately. On the other hand, the iOS shows all your apps when you unlock the screen but you have to open an app in order to look for new mails or updates.

Enhanced multitasking

In the windows 8, Microsoft has aimed at improving multitasking which is the core of improving efficiency. In Windows 8 you can not only have multiple apps active at the same time but also decide how much space do you allocate each of them on the screen. For example, you can have a video playing on one part of the screen and newsreader for viewing news on a strip on one side.

Improved File Browser

In the Demo video on Windows 8 you can see that all files have been categorically segregated into pictures, music, videos which are available for access at a central location. You can choose and use files not just from the file system but from any other app installed on the system. This makes is very easy to access files created and stored by multiple apps on the system.

Enhanced weather widget

For as long as you may have heard, users have time and again complained about the lack of a proper weather widget in the apple platforms. Neither does the weather icon in the iOS shows the weather nor are there any good weather apps available for the Apple operating systems. Split QWERTY keyboard

A very important and helpful feature that Windows 8 has demonstrated is their new keyboard layout.They have made the virtual keyboard much more ergonomic and reachable by splitting it into two part easily accessible by two hands on either side of the screen. iPad users will tell you how difficult it becomes to type the iPad when holding it with your one hand or thumbs.This could be overcome if they implement such an input method into the future OSs. Helpful system tray The system tray lets you control what you want to view and what you want to hide so that you don’t get distracted by unwanted messages and notifications from time to time.
