Alzheimer’s or dementia may be just another disease for you, but ask those who have a patient suffering from these diseases at home. Trust me, it is never easy to take care of a person who remembers everything and then forgets it in a jiffy. Technology finally has evolved to a stage where such patients could take care of themselves all alone, especially in the kitchen. A kitchen loaded with hidden sensors, projectors and a central computer that assesses and relays the entire process of assisting a patient is what the ambient kitchen is all about.
The sensors come into play first by detecting the patient’s movement and the time when he forgets or gets confused. The patient is then assisted with written projections on the closet wall helping him to complete his task. Currently under development as a £36million project at Newcastle University, the “ambient kitchen” prototype is focusing on the possible uses of digital technology.
The aim is to learn a patients’ behavior and track the unusual changes so as to assist him in confusion with a prompt such as a projection on a closet. According to the researchers, this technology could go public in the next five years, but as far as I see, this development could be restricted to the developed world for at least the next decade taking into consideration the heavy costs involved.
