The developers of a female robot Aiko have also created a hand with five functional fingers, 15 movable joints, and feedback sensitivity. The hand doesn’t consume much power and though has been designed for Aiko, can be used on amputees forearms as well. This low cost replacement hand could change many handicapped people’s lives but of course, it needs a lot of improvements before doing so. However, with enough improvements, it could change the way we look at prosthesis. Meanwhile the hand was being tried on Aiko at a Starbucks joint where the robot has been picking straws, cups, cardboard etc. The hand’s material costs about $1800.
