Age detection software determines age through face

Posted By: Alpheus Danson | Sep 24 2008

Imagine a software application that could, with a high degree of accuracy, judge how old you are by just looking at your face. No, that isn’t far-fetched since the age-estimation software has already been developed. Methods like face detection to determine a person’s age will go a long way in enabling surveillance, security control, marketing efforts, monitoring of “under-18” activities, and so on. Most importantly, the developers believe people’s privacy wouldn’t be compromised by adopting this medium. The age-detection software comprises three basic modules - face detection, discriminative manifold learning, and multiple linear regression. The accuracy, though, depends on the age spectrum that the subject falls into. It hits an amazing 80% for ages up to 10.

What’s Innovative: Age detection methods used so far rely on the body, gender and expression clues. The age-detection software developed at the University of Illinois relies entirely on facial cues to determine the age of a person, making it far more accurate than older methods since health and other external factors can affect body parameters.

Watch This: The age-detection software is undoubtedly a fascinating breakthrough. Not only does it serve regular applications pertaining to age identification, it would make matters easier for law-keepers to ensure children stay away from tobacco, pornography and other negative influences.
