The Genexinh Company is claiming that they have developed a gene that produces a protein which splits water molecules in hydrogen and oxygen.
The electron can than be stripped from the molecule to give electricity. Trent Nguyen CEO of the company is keeping cards close to his chest and has refused to identify the organism, while the company is busy in filing patents for the technology.
If this technology comes into production the company says the industry can do away with the costly hydrogen fuel cells. One of the big knocks against using hydrogen as a fuel source is the cost and energy required to produce it.
The reaction takes place at around 45 degrees Celsius, lower than the 815 degrees Celsius required when hydrocarbons are used. Genexinh is currently applying for patents and seeking venture capital funding.
