The American Diebold system used for electronic voting in America, packed with dozens of hardware and software has become a piece of mockery in front of India’s EVM. The extremely complex Diebold system is unnecessarily squeezed with touch screens, extensive GUI functionality, PCMCIA storage cards, servers and complex software cost a huge $3300 per piece; whereas the Indian EVM, designed and developed Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), costs just $230 a piece and is based on simple ‘assembly level’ code written and burnt into a circuit board.’
Check out the wonderful analysis of the two systems and you’ll know how sometimes overindulgence brings forth bizarre results and drains out sanity.
