In an ultimate tribute to geekdom, designer Michael Salter, an associate professor of digital arts at the University of Oregon, has created a giant 22 feet high robot sculpture made entirely out of polystyrene. The incredible Styrobot is so huge that it requires a wooden, skeletal armature to keep it from swerving and crashing down on hapless visitors on the ground while specially created smaller Styrobots at its feet keep people from getting too close. The magnificent sculpture is actually made of many small pieces glued together, all of which were crafted by Salter over the winter. Even though all of the sculptures are destroyed at the end of the showing, they still leave behind an interesting comment on the made-for-waste packing material industry.
