Apparently, the hand crank OLPC too gratified the budding geeks in the developing world, with no strings attached, as is doing this new string-powered one; it hardly matters when the cost is just $100 and the machine actually performs, isn’t it.



Yes, the $100 laptop has shunned the hand crank and is now powered by a small, quiet, and easy to use generator, in fact much better than the hand crank, which can be kicked off by a readily available string.



The laptop, festooned with a 500MHz processor and 500MB of flash memory, requires around 20 watts of energy every 10 minutes and the generator is sufficient to produce the same. However, long-life batteries would have shown MIT’s far-sightedness, however, that too would follow soon, till then keep pulling the string.
