As civilization progresses more and more advanced technologies would be put to use by human beings to further improve the way they do things. One such area where such research is going on in a massive way is transportation. One of the major problems facing the transportation sector is lack of roads. New roads can be created up to a certain extent since the area of land required for building roads is fixed. But the number of cars plying on the road is increasing everyday since more and more people are buying them. That is why, we experience long traffic jams quite frequently.
One solution to this problem of traffic jams is to build cars that would not use roads at all. Yes, I am talking of flying cars. Today, flying cars are being seen as a possible solution to the problems of traffic jams, red lights, bad roads etc.

1. DARPA’s four-seater flying car by AVX
This is the AVX concept from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This is basically a car, in which, some features of a helicopter have been incorporated to make it a flying car. This flying car concept has been fitted with a pair of co-axial rotors which are currently seen in military helicopters like the Kamov Ka-25 and the Ka-31. The AVX also has two duct engines fitted on the back which helps propel the flying car forward at a much greater speed. As far as capability of the AVX is concerned, it will be able to carry four persons or a payload of 1,040 lbs at an altitude of 10,000 feet. The range of the AVX has been projected to be 250 miles. If the need ever arises, the AVX is also capable of traveling 140 mph on road.

2. Cell Craft G440 Flying Car
This is the Cell Graft G440 flying car concept. The Cell Graft G440 flying car concept will be powered by two jet engines. One of the two engines will be fitted on the nose and another will be fitted at the rear of the craft. Apart from these two engines, the car will be fitted with four more turbines to facilitate vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). The flying car is also easy to operate. It has two levers - one for thrust and another for steering the car.

3. Libellula
The Libellula flying car concept is the brainchild of designer Andrew Solesbury. The flying car has been fitted with things like stabilized rear wings and front wings with independent ailerons for better roll control. The rear wing of this concept car resembles the ones fitted on today's Formula One racing cars and are used to control speed and efficiency of the car. The rear wing also controls the turbine engine of the car and rotates it to increase handling capabilities of the car. Since the car is powered by an aero-engine, a pair of air-intakes has been built to aid the functioning of the engine.

4. Hammerhead futuristic flying car
This hammer shaped flying car has been conceived by Jeff Allen Case. Because of its shape, the car has been aptly named as the Hammerhead flying car. Some of the capabilities of this flying car compares well with the airplanes flying today. The concept has three turbine engines fitted on it - two at the front and one in the rear of the car. The front engines provide lift, while the rear engine propels the car forward. According to the designer, the Hammerhead will ultimately have a top speed of 250 mph and a maximum operating altitude of 8000 ft. It will also have a range of 300 miles.

5. Audi Shark flying car
Auto giant Audi is also ready to jump into the future flying car market with its Sharkconcept. The most interesting thing about the Shark flying car concept is that it has no wheels. The entire design of the car resembles the body of a shark which gives it increased aerodynamic efficiency. The canopy of the Shark flying car concept opens vertically just like the canopy of modern day fighter planes. The Shark concept combines aerodynamic efficiency with speed and agility in the most spectacular manner.

6. YEE flying car
Believe it or not, this flying car concept has been conceived by three students from the South China University of Technology. They are Zhu Wenxi, Lai Zexin, and Pan Jiazhi. The car can be changed into a flying object through transformation. The front wheels of the car gets upturned sideways and back wheels act as the engine of the craft since it has been fitted with propellers. The upturned front wheels functions as the wings of the car when it is in flying mode.

7. 2056 Alfa Romeo Spix Flying Car
Here is what an Alpha Romeo flying car of the future might look like. Called the Alpha Romeo Spix, the flying car has been conceived by Belgian design firm Creatix. The car has a special capability which enables it to hover like a helicopter. The car has been fitted with suppressed wheels to make it more aerodynamic. The car looks pretty sturdy as the designer wanted to give an impression of power and robustness.

8. Audi Calamaro flying car
The Calamaro is another flying car concept from automaker Audi. The concept was created by Tibor for a design competition that was organized by Porsche Hungary. No one knows how or what will power the Calamaro since it has no engine, propeller or exhausts. All it has is an air intake at the front which points to the fact that the car may be powered by a jet engine. According to the designer, the shape of the Calamaro was inspired by "the bone of the Cuttlefish".

9. Honda Fuzo flying car
The Fuzo concept, conceived by designer John Mahieddine, is a VTOL flying car. It has been fitted with four turbines which enables the car to fly at a maximum speed of 400 mph. The car has been made from lightweight materials like carbon-fiber composites, Kevlar, and carbon nanotubes. The car will be flown by a fly-by-wire control system and will be fitted with GPS. Things like airbags and parachutes will also be fitted to increase the safety features of the car.

10. CCC concept car
The CCC Concept from ZEEP Design literally transforms a car into a helicopter. The CCChas been fitted with foldable rotors that remain hidden when the car is running on the road. Both the main rotor as well as the tail rotor comes out when the car is getting ready to fly. When the transformation of the car is complete, it looks like a small helicopter.
