What is the best way to edit static network routes in linux?

I am using RHEL4. I have configured two NIC of my machine, the problem is that is taking eth1 as default route, I want to make it eth0 as default route. One more thing I want to add another route using route add command but after rebooting m/c the route has deleted, how to make it permanent. Should I delete and add back in the change or edit the network scripts file?

Static routes are manually created on the Linux-based router for the admin to produce the routing of packets to a destination network.

The use of static routes under Linux operating systems is recommended only in small-scale networks due to topology changes usually are minimal and manageable. Since a large network, any change of sub net could mean hours or even days of work for the administrator.

Static routes improves overall performance of a network(especially saving bandwidth). They are also useful when there is only access to the network. For example, multiple LAN's in different offices are connected to the Internet through a single access in the office.
