Does 500W power do well for PNY 9800 GTX?

I was wondering to upgrade my system with PNY 9800 GTX. But the problem which instantly struck into my mind is that- What power supply will be able to power PNY 9800 GTX? I mean I only have a 500W power supply at my home and I have doubts on it for bring enough for my GTX 9800. Here is where I need to help me with your personal experience whether what will be the right amount of power supply to power PNY 9800 GTX? Please help me to find out what power supply should I get also keep in mind that it certainly doesn’t burn a whole in my pocket.

Hello Friend,

if you have a power supply of 500w then that is surely enough, as the minimun requirement is 450 watts.

I searched through and came across a list of other minimum requirements you need to check and recheck for the proper functioning:

  1. Intel or AMD compatible motherboard
  2. At least 512MB system RAM
  3. PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0 compliant motherboard with one x16 graphics slot
  4. Two 6-pin supplementary power connectors
  5. A minimum 450W or greater system power supply (with 12V current rating of 24A)****
  6. 50 MB of available hard drive space
  7. CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  8. Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, or Vista
  9. VGA or DVI-I compatible monitor

In this particular case, the PSU meets the minimum required watts, but apart from the power supply there are other factors too that affect your problem. You need to check whether you meet the minimum amperage on the +12V rails of your PSU (it's supposed to be mentionned on the graphic card box), you can find this info on the side of your PSU or on the site of the PSU maker. For example, if you need a minimum of 400W and 26amps on the +12V rails for the card and you have 480W but only 24 amps, it won't work. The problem you just described seems like a power problem, so maybe you don't have enough amps on the +12V rails of your PSU.
